Company: A Romantic Comedy with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth was a groundbreaking musical set in New York City, winning  the 1971 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Lyrics, Best Scenic Design, and Best Direction of a Musical.   Wagner High School Theater has also staged acclaimed productions of two other Sondheim musicals, West Side Story in 2009 and Sweeney Todd in 2012.

Set in a swinging New York City in the 1970’s, Company follows the odyssey of perpetual bachelor Robert (Bobby) Harris on the occasion of his 35th birthday who has been unable, or more to the point, unwilling,  to walk down the aisle, until now.  A series of vignettes follows Bobby and his favorite five married couples, as well as his relationship with his three current girlfriends.  Bobby and his “good” friends gather to celebrate and offer varying degrees of relationship advice in a quirky and hilarious fashion which increasingly inspires Bobby to tie the knot before it’s too late, all seen through Bobby’s eyes.  Will he ever discover what he needs to find happiness?

Company will be the first musical production to be staged at Susan E. Wagner High School’s new Performing Arts Center and Black Box Theatre which opened this past September.   This dedicated Performing Arts Center is a first for any New York City public high school.

The show features Wagner High School’s Senior Theatre Majors including Joseph Gottfried as Bobby.  Company is directed by theatre teacher Diane Zerega with musical direction by chorus and music teacher Keith Waage.  Company will feature an orchestra under the direction of music teacher Paul Corn, who is also the Assistant Principal of the Performing and Visual Arts at Wagner High School.

Company includes some of Sondheim’s most recognizable songs including Getting Married Today, The Ladies Who Lunch,  Side by Side,  and Being Alive.

The performance dates are:

  • Thursday, January 12, @ 7:00pm
  • Friday, January 13 @ 3:00pm and 7:00pm
